April is Heartworm Awareness Month, and we are taking this opportunity to share what pet owners should know about heartworm, how it spreads, and why prevention is one of the most important steps in protecting your pet’s health.
How Heartworm Spreads
Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes. What some people may not realize is that mosquitoes can survive even when temperatures drop into the 40s.
Because of this, heartworm can spread during many months of the year and across all 50 states.
Heartworm preventatives work by eliminating immature larvae, but they do not treat adult worms. Because of this, consistency matters, and skipping even one month can leave pets unprotected.
Even in colder months, the risk does not completely go away, which is why pets should stay on prevention year-round.
Prevention vs. Treatment
Heartworm prevention is not only important for your pet’s health, it is also much more manageable than treatment.
Preventative medication can cost as little as $10 per month. They are often given as a monthly chewable. Certain types even protect against heartworm, fleas, and ticks!
On the other hand, heartworm treatment can cost anywhere from $500 to over $1000. It also requires multiple injections over several months.
Prevention helps avoid a much more complicated and expensive process later on.
A Simple Step That Makes a Big Difference
Heartworm is a serious disease, but it is also preventable.
Consistent use of preventative medication and routine testing can make a significant difference in your pet’s health.
At Underdog Vet Services, we offer heartworm preventatives, testing, and treatment at affordable rates to support both pets and the people who love them.
